Bio:
Lisa Steele is a 5th-generation chicken keeper, Maine Master Gardener and lifelong thrifty New Englander. She’s the founder of Fresh Eggs Daily®, the popular natural chicken keeping site which has been named one of the top ten garden blogs by Better Homes & Gardens magazine.

The author of several books including Fresh Eggs Daily: Raising Happy, Healthy Chickens Naturally (St. Lynns Press, 2013), Gardening with Chickens (Quarto, 2016), and most recently 101 Chicken Keeping Hacks (Quarto, 2018), she has appeared on Home and Family on the Hallmark channel, P. Allen Smith’s Garden Home on NPR, Good Morning Maine, Great Day Houston, Good Day Columbus, and San Antonio Living among others, and has been featured on the front page of the Wall Street Journal.

Ep 39: Keto & Agriculture – with Dominic D’Agostino, Ph.D.

Listen as Dr. Dominic D’Agostino teaches us about the ketogenic diet, nutrition, the link between healthcare and agriculture, and what he and his wife have learned while working on their sustainable and regenerative farm in Florida.

Bio:
Dominic D’Agostino, Ph.D., is a tenured Associate Professor in the Department of Molecular Pharmacology and Physiology at the University of South Florida (USF) Morsani College of Medicine and a Research Scientist at the Institute for Human and Machine Cognition (IHMC). Dr. D’Agostino received his B.S. in Nutritional Science and Biological Sciences in 1998 at Rutgers University before receiving a Predoctoral Fellowship in neuroscience at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in 1999.  In 2004 Dr. D’Agostino entered into a postdoctoral fellowship in neuroscience at the Boonshoft School of Medicine at Wright State University in Ohio before moving his research program to USF Tampa in 2006. Funding through the Department of Defense (DoD) and Office of Naval Research (ONR) lead him to develop nutritional strategies related to enhancing resilience in undersea environments, treating neurological disorders and in brain cancer treatment. Dr. D’Agostino participated as a research scientist and crew member on NASA’s Extreme Environment Mission Operations 22 (NEEMO 22) and continues to work closely with federal organizations, private industry, 501c3 foundations and media outlets. Dr. D’Agostino and his wife spend a considerable amount of time working on their farm in Florida with a focus on sustainable and regenerative agriculture.

Ep 38: Crisis In the Dairy Industry – with Sarah Lloyd

Listen as we discuss the problems facing dairy producers and our rural communities and how we can all work together towards building a better food system.

Bio:
Sarah Lloyd farms with her husband Nels Nelson on the 350-cow Nelson dairy farm in Wisconsin. She works off-farm as the Director of Special Projects for the Wisconsin Farmers Union (WFU). This work includes; support for Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farmers, organizing for fair prices for dairy farmers through the Dairy Together campaign, and research on fair labor issues in agriculture. She is also the Director of Development and the Secretary of the Board for the Wisconsin Food Hub Cooperative, which aggregates and sells fresh produce into local wholesale markets for its farmer members. 


Sarah has a PhD in Rural Sociology from UW-Madison and a Masters in Rural Development from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. She has served on the National Dairy Board and the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board.

About John:
John Ikerd, Professor Emeritus of Agricultural Economics, University of Missouri, Columbia.

John was raised on a small dairy farm in southwest Missouri and received his BS, MS, and Ph.D. degrees in agricultural economics from the University of Missouri. He worked in private industry for a time and spent thirty years in various professorial positions at North Carolina State University, Oklahoma State University, University of Georgia, and the University of Missouri before retiring in early 2000. Since retiring, he spends most of his time writing and speaking on issues related to sustainability with an emphasis on economics and agriculture. About Sarah: 
Sarah Wentzel-Fisher is the Executive Director of the Quivira Coalition, an innovative conservation organization devoted to building soil, biodiversity, and resilience on western working landscapes. Sarah, a committed champion of the local food movement and of resilient agriculture, has worked in food and agriculture planning for over a decade with a focus on supporting young and beginning farmers and ranchers. She was the editor of Edible Santa Fe from 2011 to 2017. From 2013 to 2015 she worked for the National Young Farmers Coalition as an organizer. She is currently on the boards of the Rio Grande Agricultural Land Trust and the Southwest Grassfed Livestock Alliance. In her free time she enjoys visiting farms and ranches, experimenting in her kitchen, and keeping chickens in her backyard.

Ep 33: Holistic Management International – with Ann Adams, Executive Director

Ann Adams, Executive Director, Holistic Management International (HMI) joins us to discuss regenerative agriculture, helping family farmers and ranchers become more prosperous, improving food quality, and how we all can do our part in improving the environment.

Bio:

Ann has worked in the nonprofit world for over 20 years, creating and directing national programs, collaborating with over 100 non-profit and government entities to create positive impact among producers and land stewards seeking to build & maintain sustainable farms, ranches and healthy land. Her fund development work has included raising over $1 million for national whole farm planning training for beginning farmer programming. In 2015, she was awarded the Quivira Coalition’s Leadership in Conservation Award.

Ann has been a Holistic Management Certified Educator since 1998 and has practiced and taught Holistic Management® in multiple capacities for 20 years. She also has facilitated classes (onsite and distance learning), taught workshops and presented at conferences. She has written countless articles, helped develop agriculture-based software for financial and grazing planning and written a training handbook, At Home with Holistic Management: Creating a Life of Meaning.

Ann also taught courses at Indiana University, Wittenberg University, and Antioch College. She earned her BSED from Ohio University and her PhD from Indiana University. When she isn’t serving as our Executive Director for HMI, Ann is Chief Goatherd on her small farm in the Manzano Mountains and Captain of her Earthship (a house made out of tires with photovoltaics, composting toilet and rainwater harvesting) southeast of Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Ep 29: Infinity Hundred Farms – David McConnell

Listen as David McConnell teaches us about Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) and discusses how he juggles being a full-time farmer, artist, record producer, furniture designer and father.

Bio: 
David McConnell is the principal and head grower for Infinity Hundred Farms. He manages the farm’s multiple sites which total over 30 acres, and make Infinity Hundred Farms one of the largest urban farms in the United States. The land and the hydroponic greenhouse located at the non-profit hub Raleigh City Farm in downtown Raleigh, NC is also under David’s purview as Infinity Hundred Farms’ newest site. Infinity Hundred Farms serves the downtown Raleigh restaurants with nutrient dense, high quality produce grown sustainably and free from GMOs and pesticides. The farm’s CSA program runs 4 times annually, corresponding to each growing season, and proudly serves close to 200 members.

David  incorporates farm practices based on permaculture and biodynamics. With seven years of farming now under his belt, he is currently writing a book all the while juggling being a father, artist, record producer, furniture designer and last but not least, a full-time farmer.

Ep 28: Peter Byck – Documentary Filmmaker

Listen as Peter Byck discusses documentary filmmaking, climate change, and his research on how regenerative grazing can improve the environment.

ABOUT PETER:
Peter Byck is a professor of practice at Arizona State University, in both the School of Sustainability and the Cronkite School of Journalism. He is the director, producer and writer of carbon nation. He is currently helping to lead a large research project focused on Adaptive Multi-Paddock (AMP) grazing; collaborating with 20 scientists and 10 ranchers, focused on soil health & soil carbon storage, microbial/bug/bird biodiversity, water cycling and much more. Byck has currently completed a series of 11 short films focused on regenerative grazing: www.soilcarboncowboys.com and is working on a long-form documentary on the AMP grazing research project.

FILMMAKING EXPERIENCE:
Byck has over 25 years experience as a director and editor. His 1st documentary, “Garbage,” won the South by Southwest Film Festival, screened in scores of festivals and played at the Museum of Modern Art and Lincoln Center. Byck’s 2nd documentary, carbon nation, has screened all over the world; it won the IVCA Clarion Award, the GreenMe Global Festival, and was runner-up for the EMA Award. Byck has directed shows for MTV starring Will Smith, John Travolta, Nicholas Cage, Drew Barrymore, Gwyneth Paltrow & David Duchovny. Ep 26: Elisabeth Erickson-Noe, Independent Cattle Rancher

About Elisabeth Erickson-Noe:
Raised on her family’s cattle ranch in Central California, Elisabeth’s roots in agriculture run five generations deep. Expanding the family’s ranching operations to Colorado led Elisabeth to her future husband where together they run their own commercial beef operation and enjoy raising their children in the canyons of Southeastern Colorado.

Elisabeth obtained a Bachelor of Science in Biology with an emphasis in Neurology from the University of Texas at San Antonio. Advocating for producers is in her nature and she has successfully helped defend local ranchers against government overreach attempts by the National Park Service and United States Forest Service. She is passionate about serving the people on the land and working towards the renewal of decentralized markets.

Elisabeth worked for the Colorado Independent CattleGrowers Association as their Media Coordinator, researching and writing for the organization on topics pertinent to independent cattle ranchers. Additionally she served one term as the National Beef Chairperson for Women Involved in Farm Economics. Currently, she devotes her time to raising and educating her two young children, working with her husband on the ranch, and ministering God’s grace and goodness as a leader in the Women’s ministry at her church.

Elisabeth, along with her husband and children, are excited to soon offer their pasture raised, all-natural beef, to American families. About Sonya Coté:
Sonya Coté is a perfect blend of chef, artist and storyteller. With a background in art and graphic design, Coté has had quite a vibrant career. Even as her culinary endeavors expand, she remains an artist. Each new plate is her canvas that tells its own story.

As many Austin diners know, Coté is the free spirit behind Hillside Farmacy and Eden East, the latter being located on an urban farm that her and her partner David are currently maintaining.  At Eden East, patrons can dine al fresco under the stars on a menu that is based on what’s in season on the farm and as well as shop produce and local goods at farmers market. 

Coté’s story begins in a coastal community in Rhode Island, where she grew up with a love for camping and an affinity for cooking. About Kaycee Braden:
Kaycee Braden has a passion for food.  From her earliest memories to her current daily activities, she knew she could find an outlet for her passion and how food is shared, sold & grown, within the food community. The recent “Farm to Table” movement became a way for Kaycee to share what she had learned through her travels & help grow this community in Austin by bringing healthy food resources & alternatives to “big ag”.

Fresh faced & starry eyed, she started her journey into the food scene by earning her Permaculture Design Certification with an emphasis on community development and ethno botanical horticulture in her early twenties. Wanting to dig deeper into learning more about food justice Kaycee found herself traveling across the globe study in depth small agriculture and the effects of the green revolution in Rajasthan, India. She then went on to graduate with her BA from Evergreen State College in sustainable agriculture & community development.  She then set out to begin her life pursuing her passion.

Kaycee is a proud Texas native, a world traveler who has resided in many places.  She has recently come back home to Texas to bring us her experiences and love of food culture to the everyday operations of a restaurant located in the heart of Austin.  Austin Texas has quickly become a busy, thriving food community with deep roots. She began her employment at Eden East upon her arrival to the city while still attending culinary classes.  Through the years, she worked through each department of the restaurant including kitchen, then ultimately ending up as the General Manager. After success in this role, she then became a valued partner to the business.

Her hard work and dedication has brought Eden East Restaurant & Farm much success.  Through her education, guests & employees both can learn about the inner workings of a restaurant & an urban farm.
